Why Your Bible Reading Plan Might Be Dangerous

This March will mark my 11th year in full-time, vocational ministry. In 11 years, I’ve picked up on a few things. I’ve noticed that Christians tend to have predictable, cyclical behavior. For example, many Christians start the new year with two things:

    • A Daniel fast
    • A “Read the Entire Bible in a Year” reading plan.

Jumping into 2018

Nothing gets you to “turn the page” quite like a new year! A new year, new goals, and….a new catchphrase?

When the new year rolls around, a handful of church leaders feel the need to make declarations on what God is saying for the new year (as if it might differ from a month ago) and it usually sounds like this:

  • 2004, the year of more!”
  • 2006, God is gonna fix….what was broken last year.”
  • 2007, seven is the number of completion….God is going to complete some things in your life!”
  • 2010, get ready to see God’s hand!”
  • 2014….2+0+1+4 = 7 = Seven is the number of completion…God is going to complete some things in your life!”

No, this vlog post isn’t me singing a new Edwin Starr song, but a thought and discussion on John 1:16. What are the implications of God’s grace? How does it affect us and do we overcomplicate this? I talk about these questions and more in this video, which I initially broadcasted via facebook live.

Why Hearing God’s Voice Shouldn’t Be A Foreign Concept.

I love the NBC show, The Office! So many laughs, so many awkward Michael Scott moments and so many one-liners! One of my favorite Office moments comes from Pam Beesley. At the company award ceremony hosted at Chili’s, Pam wins the “whitest sneakers award”. Upon receiving the award, Pam, who is slightly inebriated at the time, gives thanks to God for her award and then utters “I feel God in this Chili’s”.

…which prompts this classic Jim look:home-img

I totally understand why Jim gave Pam that look, but that look stuck with me. Why? Well, many Christians give the “Jim” look when they hear a fellow believer say that they’ve heard from God, especially if that person isn’t in vocational ministry. I understand a non-believer doubting that God speaks to people, but why would a Christian have a hard time believing that? Jesus made it clear: If you are one of His followers, you can hear His voice.

This week, I had an unexpected, yet awesome opportunity to pray for a deaf man’s ears to open while at Starbucks (all while waiting for my iced coffee!) I share the whole story in the video above.

Afterward, as I was driving home, I realized one BIG reason we don’t share Jesus with others! I immediately went on Facebook Live to share this with my facebook friends and the Facebook community! I hope this video will encourage you in sharing your faith!
